Miscellany

A small gift

in the dirt
we planted them,
eager to greet their cheery blooms.
.
but every last one died, suddenly
(we think maybe it was the hooligans next door)
their cheeriness blackened stiff.
.
but then – this guy!
he just showed up,
all by his lonesome, cheery self,
waiting at the mailbox just for us.
